Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: A European Dialogue at the DST

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing our daily lives: it sorts information for us, influences decisions and shapes the way we live and work together. But according to which values does it operate – and who takes responsibility for its impact?

These questions were at the centre of our public conference “Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: A European Comparison”, organised as part of the Quinzaine Franco-Allemande d’Occitanie and the IMPULS//ION cultural programme at the Deutsche Schule Toulouse.

A full auditorium, an engaged audience and many thoughtful questions reflected the great interest in the topic. For almost two hours, Dr. Christopher Koska and Jérôme Béranger discussed the ethical, legal, and philosophical challenges of artificial intelligence from Franco-German perspectives.

Dr. Christopher Koska presented the German perspective, shaped by data protection, institutional responsibility, and “Corporate Digital Responsibility”, while Jérôme Béranger explored the ethical questions surrounding AI, particularly in medical and societal contexts. Together, they examined the opportunities, risks and responsibilities involved in developing AI that is compatible with European values.

Their nuanced exchange and the lively participation of the audience made the evening both stimulating and inspiring. Such moments reflect the identity of the DST as a place of dialogue, where different perspectives come together and collective reflection on the major questions shaping our society is encouraged.

The conference formed part of the IMPULS//ION programme, through which the DST makes cultural and societal topics accessible to a wider audience. The aim is to create spaces for discussion, knowledge sharing, and lived Franco-German perspectives – including for our students, who regularly benefit from exchanges with experts in the classroom.

Our sincere thanks go to both speakers as well as to all visitors – families, partners, and friends of the DST – who helped make this evening possible.
