From Observing to Creating: Discovering Craft Trades in the Early Years
As part of the Crafts Project, our future schoolchildren explored a range of craft professions and had the opportunity to take part in practical activities themselves. The aim was to give the children insights into different types of craftsmanship while also developing their motor and social skills.
Following a short theoretical introduction, the children discovered several trades, including rope making, tailoring, bookbinding, pottery, soap making, and glasswork. Short videos provided a first impression of each profession and prepared the children for the practical activities.
The children then became craftspeople themselves: they made bracelets, printed T-shirts, painted their own plates, bound small notebooks, produced soap, and decorated mirrors with mosaics. In doing so, they became familiar with different materials, tools, and techniques while taking on new challenges.
At the same time, the project strengthened teamwork, concentration, and fine motor skills. Most importantly, the children experienced the satisfaction of creating something of their own – and taking pride in it.
